The Three Types of Mental Health Programs at Sequoia Behavioral Health

At Sequoia Behavioral Health, we make sure all of our clients’ treatment needs are being met. This personalized approach doesn’t mean that we just choose programming based on the issues that brought you in. It also means we holistically look at your history, the severity of the problems you want to solve, and your goals for treatment.

In this article, we’ll cover:

  • The three types of mental health programs at Sequoia
  • What to expect from these programs
  • Who would benefit from each program
  • How to know which one you should look into

Each program caters to different kinds of clients, and allows our staff to truly individualize every person’s treatment. Nearly everyone can benefit when they have access to different options for care.

Mental Health Programs at Sequoia

For many people, talk therapy once or twice a week can be incredibly helpful. Others may need a more involved and intense treatment. That’s what Sequoia Behavioral Health Specializes in. Our doors are open for those who need structure and a bit more attention than traditional therapy sessions can offer.

The three types of mental health programs

We offer three different types of mental health programs and addiction treatment:

  • Inpatient treatment
  • Partial hospitalization program
  • Intensive outpatient program

Each of these programs can include numerous therapies for truly individualized mental health care. Some of the cornerstone modalities of each program include:

  • Individual Therapy
  • Group Therapy
  • Somatic Experiencing
  • Neurofeedback
  • Trauma Therapy

Though the therapy modalities are similar in each program, the amount or level at which you do them can vary.

Inpatient Treatment

Also called residential treatment, this is usually what people think of as “rehab.” However, inpatient treatment isn’t just for people with addiction. It can also help those struggling with crippling anxiety, severe depression, or a multitude of other severe mood, behavior, or personality disorders.

During inpatient treatment, a client will live at the Sequoia residence, usually for 30 days. This facility is meant to feel like home. With bedrooms, a full kitchen with home-cooked meals, and TV and dining rooms, our goal is to make clients feel as comfortable as possible.

During their stay, they’ll go through several hours of different types of therapy each day. These therapies can range from individual talk therapy to hiking through the beautiful Arizona mountains, to meditative sound baths. Clients get to experience both individual and group treatment in a safe and welcoming environment.

Who Can Benefit From Inpatient Treatment

Since this level of therapy programming is the most intensive, it’s recommended to those who need more round-the-clock-care and medical attention. Most who need addiction treatment will start their journey at our residential facility.

Inpatient treatment is  also a good fit for those with severe mood, behavioral, and personality disorders who are having a hard time functioning. They could be a danger to themselves or others, or just need more involved and integrative therapy than regular counseling can offer.

Partial Hospitalization Program

Entering a partial hospitalization program, or PHP, doesn’t happen for everyone. Many Sequoia clients who finish residential treatment will go on to a PHP as part of reintegration to “normal” life. Others might not qualify for residential treatment but still need extensive care.

PHP at Sequoia is somewhat of an inbetween of residential care and outpatient treatment. Rather than living at the facility, clients will return to their homes each night. Our PHP is six hours a day, five days a week at our outpatient center in the East Valley.

Like residential treatment, those in the PHP will receive a wide variety of therapies tailored to their specific needs. They’ll still work with medical staff for medication management, and attend different kinds of group and individual counseling sessions.

Who Can Benefit From a PHP

For the most part, clients who benefit the most from PHP will have recently completed residential treatment and are ready to begin transitioning back into their “normal life.”

Though clients will spend many hours in treatment for five days a week, they still live at home. It’s an opportunity to practice what they’ve learned so far, and experience challenges that can be addressed the very next day.

Intensive Outpatient Program

Also called simply an IOP, this outpatient program is usually the last step for clients before they leave our care. It’s the least involved care level at Sequoia while still helping those who need extra assistance before complete reintegration.

Many of our clients also only go through the IOP. Anyone who doesn’t need something as intensive as residential treatment, but still needs something regimented and involved would be a candidate for the IOP.

Our IOP can be seen as a “step back” from the PHP. Clients live at home and commute to the outpatient center for just a few hours several days of the week.

At Sequoia, we offer two levels of IOP:

  • IOP 3 is three hours of counseling three days a week
  • IOP 5 is three hours of counseling five days a week.

Our eclectic and integrative approach to counseling works at every level of care, including IOP. In addition to group counseling and guided meditations, you’ll still do work with the different individual therapies including somatic experiencing and neurofeedback, and EMDR.

Who Can Benefit from an IOP

Usually, addiction clients will enter IOP after both residential and PHP treatment. We use these different stages of care to make life after treatment as easy as possible.

Those that come to Sequoia directly into the IOP program are likely those with severe mental health concerns who don’t need immediate crisis help, but do need something beyond an hour-long counseling session each week.

Why Are There So Many Different Types of Mental Health Programs?

Each person who goes in for treatment has their own unique needs and goals. In short, the variety in mental health programs is to help a variety of people.

Personalized care means not only working with different kinds of therapy, but also how much of it and how often.

Having the different levels of care means that there is an option for most people to get the help they need. Where one person might find that the intensive outpatient program doesn't offer enough support for their concerns, someone else will greatly benefit from it.
