Experiential Therapy

Experiential therapy uses physical and creative activities that promote healing for our minds. It’s used alongside talk therapy to treat a wide range of mental and behavioral health issues.

Using Our Bodies and Minds

Engaging our creative side might not seem like it directly works towards treatment, but it certainly does. Experiential therapy employs different artistic and physical activities to aid in treatment of a wide variety of mental and behavioral health disorders.

Treatment can involve one or more activities, depending on the individual and their needs. Some activities used in experiential therapy include:

  • Art therapy
  • Psychodrama
  • Poetry and writing therapy
  • Guided meditation
  • Adventure therapy

The goal of each kind of experiential therapy is helping people express themselves when it’s difficult to do so. The activities offer a structured and safe way to release negative feelings and thoughts, while clearing the mind.

Why Experiential Therapy?

At Sequoia Behavioral Health, we believe in a holistic approach and using different methods in every client’s treatment. Experiential therapy can work for anyone, increases the efficacy of other treatments, and gives people a new outlook on what “therapy” can be. Clients are able to see themselves and their healing journey through a new lens.

Benefits of experiential therapy are wide-reaching, and can drastically improve treatment for many.

IMPROVES COMMUNICATION

Psychodramas in particular are meant to help people improve communication skills. They involve acting out real interactions to gain perspective and learn what to do differently going forward.

RELEASES NEGATIVE EMOTIONS

Our mental health can decline when we let negativity build up inside ourselves. If you struggle with expressing yourself, experiential therapy offers many different ways to do so.

IMPROVES SELF-AWARENESS

Creating art allows clients to confront what you are actually feeling and thinking. Teamwork-oriented activities teach you to be more mindful of your own actions and how you treat others.

REPLACES NEGATIVE HABITS

Everything done in experiential therapy can be done at home. Many clients find comfort or something they’re passionate about, and continue to pursue therapeutic hobbies after they’re done with treatment.
