Strength-Based Therapy

Focusing on your strengths could change your outlook on situations and help you achieve your goals. Strength-based therapy focuses on a person’s strengths and positive attitudes to help them overcome adversity.

Finding and Cultivating Your Strengths

Strength-based therapy is a type of positive psychotherapy that helps people realize their strengths and utilize them to achieve their goals. It focused clients on what makes them special and unique rather than what is wrong with them.

Not everyone has a good grasp on what their strengths are. Strength-based therapists have several tools and techniques at their disposal to help. Here are a few:

  • Asking thoughtful questions
  • Re-framing your thoughts
  • Journaling
  • The Clifton Strengthsfinder

You may not have a clear understanding of your strengths, but strength-based therapists will help you find them.

What Does Strength-Based Therapy Look Like?

Strength-based therapy is a client-led therapy. With this approach, you’re the expert. You’ll lead the conversation while your therapist guides and encourages you. During your sessions, your therapist will help focus the conversations around your strengths and advantages you have. They’ll also encourage you to reframe your perspective on your story to make you a survivor, not a victim.

Learning About Your Strengths

Your first sessions are all about getting to know you. You’ll talk about your strengths, interests, and what makes you special.

Understanding Your Goals

Your therapist will help you explore the things you want to achieve and what makes you tick. When have you felt fulfilled and what do you enjoy the most?

Finding a Way Forward

Once you’ve identified your strengths and goals, you and your therapist will work together to create a plan of incremental growth.

Growing Your Strengths

Moving forward you’ll report back how you’re doing and find more ways you can be cultivating your strengths as you work toward your goals.
