Accelerated Resolution Therapy

Accelerated resolution therapy is a trauma therapy that helps people reframe traumatic memories in a safe, peaceful way.

Why We Use Accelerated Resolution Therapy

Memories of traumatic experiences are painful, partly because they aren’t stored in our brains correctly. The nature of the experience blocks the brain’s ability to store those memories in long-term memory.

Accelerated resolution therapy allows clients to put those memories into long-term memory storage while changing how the client reacts emotionally to them. It helps trauma victims by:

  • Reducing the anxiety caused by the memory
  • Moving the memory out of working memory into long-term memory
  • Giving the client control over how and when they remember the trauma

This therapy draws techniques and philosophies from other modalities, including eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Benefits of Accelerated Resolution Therapy

Different trauma therapies work in different ways and are better for some people than others. The reason we utilize accelerated resolution therapy at Sequoia is because it has scientific backing, and it can help clients resolve trauma quicker than other therapies.

Bilateral Stimulation

Like EMDR, accelerated resolution therapy uses physical cues to activate the brain in a way that moves memories into long-term memory storage.

Positive Rescripting

Part of reframing how the client remembers the trauma is planting positive images in their place. They imagine how they would prefer to imagine that memory.

No Narration Required

Though the client will have to visualize the traumatic memory, they don’t have to share it out loud. Vocalizing painful memories can add stress, so the client doesn’t need to share them in a session if they don’t want to.

Quickly Resolve Trauma

Accelerated resolution therapy generally lasts one hour per session, but clients tend to find relief from trauma symptoms in about five sessions.
