Support Groups
Chances are you’re not alone in your mental health struggle. There are groups across the country that meet to talk about, process, and live out their mental health recovery journey.
What Are Support Groups?
Support groups bring together people who share a common struggle. These groups can address:
- Substance use disorders
- Behavioral addictionss
- Grief
- Attachment styles
- Life with a chronic condition
Support groups are not therapy, but they have a positive impact on general mental health and the specific conditions they address. They provide a community where people can feel more comfortable talking about and processing their feelings and struggles in the open.
Every support group will look different, but most of them have similar components of sharing experiences, receiving guidance and support, and often absolute anonymity.
Benefits of Support Groups
Support groups are effective for recovery and improving overall mental health. This has been proven with extensive and long-term research. The benefits of joining a support group can carry into all areas of life, but specifically improve the likelihood of recovery.
Reduced Isolation
When engaged in a support group, you’ll find a community of people who want to see you succeed. You’ll also get a fresh perspective on your struggles.
A Safe Space
Opening up about your struggles is a near-impossible task for many. Support groups help people open up and feel more comfortable sharing their experiences.
Inspiration and Encouragement
When you join a support group, you’ll find inspiration and encouragement to continue seeking treatment and pursuing the change you want to see.
Accountability
Relapses are a part of the treatment process. Support groups help people find their feet after a relapse instead of self-isolating.
